We only got to see the "secret secret" monastery and mile after mile of Mongolian steppe. Many other travelers say they loved the northern part of Mongolia, so maybe on a future trip... I'm glad you went the "throw together a trip when I get there" route, and it sounds like your trip was memorable, even if it didn't end up being the most comfortable leg of the trip. Did you actually end up seeing the flaming cliffs? Did the driver unearth any dinosaur bones he knew the location of? and as Kuri learned, NEVER punch a Mongolian's van! now THAT is Mongolian independent travel. I know it sucked going through it, but you'll remember your Gobi experience forever! Reminds me of when I got harassed on the train to Marrakesh in Morocco, or when I had to take Misha to the hospital in Barcelona. Not fun at the time, but definitely experiences I'll remember. Guess Mongolians aren't lactose intolerant, with all that mare's milk and cheese...I would have died. Wow, what a story!
